Abstract
Agility is a key physical component in soccer because it requires the ability to change direction quickly while maintaining ball control. In early adolescence (11–15 years), the phase of motor development and coordination is still highly responsive to training stimuli. This article aims to analyze the effectiveness and the design principles of a dribbling training model with random direction changes (random direction dribbling) to improve agility in youth soccer players aged 11–15 years. The method used is a literature review examining research findings from 2021–2025 related to agility, change of direction (COD), reactive/motor-cognitive agility, and game-based training (small-sided games/SSG) as well as dribbling circuits. The synthesis results indicate: (1) pre-planned COD training tends to improve COD/dribbling performance in similarly pre-planned scenarios, whereas motor-cognitive/reactive agility training is more likely to transfer to match situations because it includes decision-making and unpredictable stimuli; (2) SAQ training and structured interventions are reported to have positive effects on physical qualities and dribbling speed; (3) soccer-specific agility assessment should consider reliable and valid COD tests with the ball. This article also proposes a random-direction dribbling training model based on visual/auditory signals and a safe training-load progression for ages 11–15.
